Excel file save error: Someone else is working in <file> right now. Please try again later on DFS Network Share

Dears,

When trying to save a modified Excel file, which has been opened from a network share (from DFS Server Windows 2008 R2), our users are receiving the following message:

Someone else is working in "\\domain.com\users\username\Document.xls" right now. Please try again later.

The clients that have been affected are Windows 7 clients with Excel 2013 , and the DFS share is being served from a Windows 2008 R2 server. DFS replication has been enabled. I have also disabled any real-time scanning that is occurring on the client to make sure that the AV software wasn't locking the files.

Any thoughts?

Regards

Hi Saumya Garg VF,

Based on your description, when the user try to save the excel file and get the error message. Have you ever tried other files e.g. Word, PDF. Or if this error only appeared in excel file?

If the user opens the file, the document creates a temp file in the same directory as the original file, normally it deletes automatically when closing the document. But with your issue the user might have no permission to delete the temp file. Thus the document gets a temp file to lock the document. When other users try to save the file, and they also have no permission to overwritten the original temp file. So they might get this error message.

If you want to verify the reason of permission, checking the temporary file. This is a hidden file and it will be the same name as your document, but prefixed with a ~$ symbols.

The easiest way out is to delete the temp file. If you didnt find the temp file, check the permissions of users.

Trying this method and let me know if it work. I am glad to help and forward to your reply.
